Active carbon treatment unit

Standard active carbon absorber are a common odour control technology. The basic objective of the carbon adsorbers is to act as dry adsorbtion filter for odorous air before emitting to the atmosphere. The odorous compounds are adsorbed to the surface of the carbon, which has a high surface to volume ratio. The carbon is then replaced or generated when it became saturated and odour breakthrough occurs. Carbon adsorbers are typically used for flow concentration airstreams. They may be used either for primary odour control or for polishing stage following chemical scrubber or biological treatment system. They maybe cost prohibitive for high concentration applications due to high cost of carbon. Carbon adsorbers typically included fibreglass vessel, which house carbon between perforated plates. A fan draws or pushes the air through the carbon adsorbers. Air containing odorous compounds enters the bottom of the vessel and travels to the outside stack of active carbon scrubber. The clean treated air then passes through granular carbon active and filter carbon active to remove entrained odour. The air then moves radially through a center located radial flow carbon vessel and discharged out the top for highly effective complete odour control. Carbon adsorbers are easy to be installed and maintained, required no chemical storage or handling, required a relatively small footprint, and typically guarantee 99% hydrogen sulphide removal efficiencies. Disadvantages include the high cost of the carbon and the required disposal of used carbon. Carbon is also not recommended with high moisture air, which saturated the carbon bed quickly. Carbon is commonly used in remote location such as pumping station wet wells. However, when humidity levels are critical it may be considered to place a high efficiency demister unit before the carbon treatment units.
